Our Men’s 1st Team kick started their 2018 LTA East Region campaign with a 5-1 win away from home against Harlow.
Rob Carter cruised to a 6-0 6-0 win, losing only 3 points all match and showing signs of the sort of tennis which got him to 800 in the world. Making his TBLTC debut, David Wright came through comfortably 6-3 6-2, showing little signs of a shoulder injury which kept him off his best in 2017. Ed Pudney won his match 6-2 6-0 hitting with great quality and match tight consistency and quickly asserting himself as a 1st team stalwart. Oli Mason, stepping in as a last minute replacement for Harry Randle who fell ill, lost out narrowly in three sets under the Harlow bubble 4-6 6-3 6-2 to an experienced opponent.
In the doubles, Carter and Wright showed County Week form, crushing their opponents 6-1 6-2. Pudney and Mason, a fresh partnership to the 1st team, drew battle lines with established county players Spooner and Perry. In arguably the match of the day, the Thorpe Bay duo showed great determination throughout, never losing serve and establishing a firm hold at the net. They saw off a determined assault from the Harlow veterans, eventually occupying the winning ground 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
The overall match was therefore won 5-1 and gets Thorpe Bay off to a fantastic start in their LTA East Region campaign. Spectator Russell Pudney said “the guys grouped together today and played great - a fantastic start to the season”. 1st team skipper Harry Randle was delighted upon hearing the results - “this is clearly a team which can go the distance this year. Consistency will be key”.
