By most accounts, a decent Finals' Day with a good crowd down, entertaining tennis, well-matched pairs and some worthy winners. It was all very even and there were no foregone conclusions, thankfully, and we witnessed some close scores, lots of deuces and real battles.

The day was a greater success in another way - three of our juniors all won a final each: Alex Downer won the Gentleman's Invitation Handicap Doubles with Chloe Jackson; Lauren Haeger-Smith won the Ladies' Handicap Doubles with Andrea Quantrill and Holly Horner-Ellis won the Adult-Junior Handicap Doubles with Paul Marks and all three youngsters played superbly - showed good attitude, consistency in rallies and displayed good doubles craft and awareness, something not easily picked up by most of their age. So, a nod to Matt Bell and our coaches for their undoubted teachings and guidance. Well done Alex, Lauren and Holly. Coming to a Leigh & Westcliff team near you!

Congratulations to all Sunday's other winners:

Ian Galbraith and Ian Turner, who won the Men's Winter Intermediate; Alex Bell and Frank Collyer, who won the 'Battle of the Legal Eagles' in the Men's Handicap Doubles; Richard Leadley and Mandy Price, who won the Mixed Handicap Doubles - suffice to say Richard is living in the shed this week! (Also, Mandy was so chuffed she had won a final, it took four security guards to prize the trophy back from her when it was time to put it back in the cabinet! - seriously, though, well done, Mandy, you played well and you earned your win!); Suzanne Ellis and Colleen Ball, who won the Ladies Winter Intermediate Tournament, although kudos to Amelia Leadley and Marian Webber who just edged a result in the tense 3-setter Ladies Intermediate Exhibition match.

Commiserations to all the runners-up who played gallantly and made the finals what they were - close and hard-fought, with some terrific tennis and winning shots.

A big 'thank you' to everyone who helped on the day to make the event possible and to those who helped leading up to it throughout the Winter: Paul Marks and Katrina Robinson for the sheer volume of work they get through (and especially for Katrina sorting the most-welcome red blankets for the crowd), Kris Newbery and Ann Jones in the kitchen; Malcolm Sedgewick, Trevor Margerison, Fiona Coull and Anne Hemmings and her team behind the bar on the day, Cy Hemmings and Terry Rawlings. And especially Sam Bright, who did a brilliant job on the Tournament Desk, keeping on top of everything... while the Tournament Secretary was losing three finals! And Sue the cleaner who cleared up our mess in the clubhouse.

Finally, thank you to everyone who came down for some of it or all of it. We had a good crowd and a successful event. So now we are ready for the Summer Tournaments! Have you put your name up yet? The entry sheets are up in the Clubhouse until Tuesday 3rd April, so get a move on.

Lots of love, Phil The Defeated Tournament Field marshall! Mr Tournament Loser! The Triple Whammy Runner-up. The Multiple Also-Ran. Macho Grande Tres! The Southend Napoleon! Victim of the Thorpe Bay Massacre! Suffered Death by a Thousand Cuts and let down his partners!! Sent to bed without any tea! X
